Injury Prevention
Advancing medical care from reactive to proactive, for a stronger, healthier you.
Keeping Yourself in Tune
Your Body is Your Vehicle for Experiencing Life
Just as regular vehicle maintenance prevents breakdowns, taking care of your body is crucial for maximizing the duration of your body’s health span and optimal performance. Unlike cars, you can’t replace your body, and quick fixes like surgeries and medications often come with dangerous risks and side-effects, and are less effective long-term than solutions like physical therapy and lifestyle changes.
Efficient Movement as Medicine – The FMT Philosophy
Our aim is to evaluate your body’s mobility, strength, and movements to identify potential sources of future degeneration or injury. Our injury prevention approach involves a comprehensive movement analysis, hands-on therapy, education in CoreFirst® Strategies for body mechanics, and a personalized exercise program to enhance functionality.
The Good News
Injury prevention is possible! Your daily movements greatly influence your injury risk, whether in your profession or lifestyle. Sometimes, making very simple, small adjustments in your daily routine can prevent pain, injury, and improve your overall health. Here are some examples of activities that our PTs can often assist patients in correcting.
Sleeping
Sleep constitutes a substantial part of your life. If you wake up feeling unrested, your body is signaling a need for change. Sleep deprivation is a massive health risk, increasing your risk of cancer, diabetes, dementia and death. If you are interested in the magnitude of importance of sleep, read Dr. Matthew Walker’s book “Why We Sleep”. Advanced PTs serve as interpreters to uncover the signs of impaired sleep, and empowering you with lifelong tools to improve your sleep quality and wake up refreshed and maintain life-long health.
Sitting
For those who spend extended hours sitting and experience discomfort or stiffness, we utilize hands-on techniques and positional training to alleviate these issues. Our PTs assist with tailored pain-relief strategies, whether in your vehicle, workplace, on a plane, or in a garden, addressing your unique circumstances.
Driving
Cars (and airplanes) have very common poor ergonomic designs to meet safety requirements which can result in the experience of pain or discomfort. Although their ergonomic designs are horrible, there are small fixes that you can implement to eliminate pain while driving. We evaluate your car setup and provide personalized recommendations, ensuring you exit your car ready to tackle the world!
Housework
Does house cleaning leave you physically drained rather than satisfied? We can instruct you in proper body mechanics for various household tasks like lifting, vacuuming, bed-making, and room cleaning, helping you maintain a youthful body and a spotless home.
Athletes
Our sport-specific FMT analyses and treatments are tailored for competitive athletes and highly active individuals aiming to avoid injury. Intensive sport-specific training can lead strength imbalances, uneven muscle tightness, and reduced performance. Our PTs assess and rectify total body imbalances unique to specific sports and activities, optimizing performance and preventing injuries.
“Weekend Warriors” (Active Adults)
If you’re a typical adult who spends most of your weekdays sitting at work and then engages in intense physical activities, you may not realize there’s a problem until a major injury occurs. Injury rates among such individuals have been increasing, often not due to collisions or trauma.
In fact, 70 – 80% of adult knee injuries are due to two factors: 1) Improper movement strategies or 2) Overtraining/Overspecialization creating the imbalance.
At IPA Physio, our PTs proactively assess the risks you face in sports and daily life, identifying and addressing areas of imbalance and movement limitations, creating a resilient body prepared for life’s challenges.
Dont Go for the Quick Fix
Check out this article in Time Magazine article highlighting the failures of our “quick fix” culture including the currently devastating U.S. opioid epidemic. Dr. Machado, of the Cleveland Clinic, calls on our medical culture to no longer look first to drugs and other dangerous or non-proven approaches. He states that we must insist that physical therapy be the new integral component for treating/managing pain as the safe, sustainable and long-term solution to the problems our “quick-fix solutions” created!
